Police report: Campton Hills sees 319 calls in May; major gas-line strike prompts six-hour evacuation

Chief James Levand provided the village board with the police department's May activity report and a summary of a major gas-line incident on June 4.
"May report, 319 calls for service, 11 accidents, 117 citations, 16 arrests in May," Levand said. He introduced Cara Romo, a local resident who began a patrol internship and will remain with the department through early August.
On June 4 a backhoe struck a major gas line near Route 64 and La Fox Road, triggering an immediate evacuation of roughly 50 businesses and several child-care facilities, according to Levand. The incident lasted about six hours and involved multiple mutual-aid agencies and county emergency management partners. Levand thanked Fox River Countryside Fire Department, Kane County Office of Emergency Management and other agencies for their response and for traffic control during the closures.
The department also received a camera grant for slightly more than $20,000 (exact amount not recalled by the chief) and a reimbursement totaling $3,612 under a bulletproof vest grant that covered 50% of the department's prior purchases. Levand said staff will apply the camera grant to the current budget year and noted the department will promote a newly appointed sergeant at the June 16 meeting.
The chief asked the board to authorize roughly $250—$300 to deliver 20 cubic yards of mulch for the police building's landscaping; trustees agreed.
