Stewart County commissioners approve FY2024 audit, reappoint planning commissioners and OK $43,892 tractor boom arm

The Stewart County Board of Commissioners on May 12 approved the county's FY2024 audit, reappointed two members to the Stewart County Planning Commission/Zoning Board and approved a $43,892.20 purchase for a tractor boom arm pending road superintendent approval.
Chairwoman Arcola Scott moved to amend the agenda to add the FY2024 audit; Commissioner Joe Lee Williams seconded and the board voted unanimously to adopt the amended agenda. The board then approved the April 14, 2026 regular meeting minutes on a motion from Commissioner Joe Lee Williams, seconded by Vice-Chair Thomas Mayo.
On administrative matters, Commissioner Joe Lee Williams moved to reappoint Willie Staten to the Stewart County Planning Commission/Zoning Board for a two-year term ending in February 2028; Vice-Chair Thomas Mayo seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Chairwoman Arcola Scott then moved to reappoint Gloria Bost to a two-year term ending February 2028; Vice-Chair Mayo seconded. Chairwoman Scott and Vice-Chair Mayo voted in favor while Commissioner Joe Lee Williams voted opposed; the motion carried.
Chairwoman Scott moved to approve the FY2024 audit; Vice-Chair Mayo seconded and the board approved the audit unanimously. Commissioner Joe Lee Williams moved to accept the April 2026 financial reports; the minutes record the motion as seconded by Commissioner Tyrone Nelson and that all voted in favor.
On road department business, County Manager Mac Moye reported on department matters and Chairwoman Scott moved to approve purchase of a boom arm for a tractor at a cost of $43,892.20, contingent on approval by Jessie Durham, acting Road Superintendent. Vice-Chair Mayo seconded; Chairwoman Scott and Vice-Chair Mayo voted in favor and Commissioner Joe Lee Williams abstained. The motion carried.
Public Safety Administrator Greg Stewart was not present but provided the April 2026 EMS report for the commission's review. County Manager Mac Moye and County Attorney Bin Minter each delivered routine reports to the commission.
Under old business the board discussed persistent trash and tires left at county dumpsters and directed County Attorney Bin Minter to draft a notice for publication in the local paper. "Diamond Mowers" was listed under new business as a previously discussed item, with no substantive action recorded in these minutes.
Commissioner Joe Lee Williams asked staff to contact trash-service providers during commissioners' comments. Williams moved to adjourn, Vice-Chair Mayo seconded, and the meeting adjourned at 5:26 PM.
