Trustees prioritize gravestone repairs and identify potential green-burial site near crematory

At their Aug. 28 meeting, the Thomaston Cemetery Board prioritized addressing fallen and endangered gravestones and identified providing a water source to the Sunrise Section as a spring project priority.
Trustees Sue Christensen and Peggy McCrea volunteered to conduct a walk-through to compile a prioritized list of gravestones requiring repair and to seek information about ownership and permission needed for repairs. Christensen said she would contact a Waldoboro source with relevant experience to determine how permission is typically handled.
The minutes also record an Assistant Sexton suggestion that there is room for a green-burial site near Avenue 12 by the crematory; the board noted the suggestion for future planning but did not take immediate action. The Sexton reported no burials in the prior two months, with one burial scheduled for the next day and another in the first week of September. The Sexton also reported ongoing lawn-maintenance issues related to dumping clippings because of a 3:30 p.m. stump-dump closure and several avenue posts damaged by vehicle strikes.
Board members assigned follow-ups: trustees will prioritize a repair list and investigate legal permissions for stone repairs; staff will continue database updates for burial records and post frequently asked questions on the town website to help the public navigate the cemetery database. The trustees set the next meeting for Sept. 25, 2025.
