Committee debates parking, accessibility and public outreach for proposed Norridgewock library

Committee members spent much of the meeting weighing tradeoffs between green space, parking and building footprint as they evaluated preliminary concept plans.

Trustees said they do not want vehicle access between the library and the adjoining school access road but support pedestrian connections; several members said restricting vehicle access would allow the library to add parking spaces and reduce conflicts with school traffic. Members also raised operational concerns including snow‑storage locations, fire‑department access and whether a retaining wall would need engineering review if moved.

Community programming and multiuse space were central to debate. Members said the library should support both children’s programming and broader community uses — a 30‑by‑30 flexible community room, space for homeschool gatherings and adult programs were repeatedly mentioned. Committee members reported recent strong participation in library programs and urged that any new building be "future proofed" to allow expansions or adaptable layout changes.

On public engagement, members discussed a short multiple‑choice survey and tabling at public events (including the Nov. 4 election), and argued the project should be framed as "library plus community space" to broaden voter support. They cautioned against holding a binding public vote before producing renderings and cost estimates. The group agreed to plan site visits so members can better visualize parking, circulation and potential landscaping tradeoffs before final recommendations are forwarded to the select board.

The meeting closed with administrative items: staff will post materials on the town website and the committee will wait for select‑board action before scheduling the next meeting.
