Trenton beer board tables Liberty Stitts' license request after ordinance-distance concerns

The Trenton beer board on Aug. 27 opened a hearing on an application from Liberty Stitts for a beer license at 501 South Lexington Street and then tabled the license for further review after council members flagged proximity to nearby childcare and the library.
Mayor Tony Burriss read Ordinance No. 8-209, which requires that beer permits be at least 300 feet from any church, school, public playground, or library. He recited measured distances from the proposed address to local facilities: Little Peoples Jump Start — 97 feet; Little Peoples Daycare — 155 feet; Trenton Housing Authority MAC Center — 163 feet; playground to MAC Learning Center — 278 feet; and the library directly across the street — 75 feet.
Assistant Chief Jeff McCoy told the board the applicant’s background check was satisfactory. Alderman Wade said he had visited the nearby locations and “no one has a problem with the selling of beer.” Attorney Jeff Mueller advised that the beer board may grant a waiver allowing operation even if the location violates the 300-foot limitation. Alderwoman Holt said, “I am a rule follower and ordinances are set up for a reason and they are to protect our community.” Alderwoman Jones emphasized concern that the ordinance’s 300-foot rule was not met by the listed distances.
Under new business, Alderman Wade moved to table the license application so the council could review it further; Alderwoman Holt seconded and the motion to table carried by voice vote. Mayor Burriss closed the beer hearing at 6:19 p.m. and convened the regular meeting.
