Newry selectpersons were presented on Nov. 26 with an estimated $371,631.08 cost to repair erosion on the Sunday River and were urged to budget at least for consultant and engineering costs while pursuing grants.
Road Commissioner/Code Officer Joelle Corey told the board a river-monitor system would cost about $32,000 to install and roughly $16,000 per year to maintain; she said staff are exploring cost-sharing arrangements with neighboring communities and available grants to offset those costs. Selectpersons discussed whether to conduct a traffic study for SR Road in winter — the board prefers winter data but raised concerns about equipment reliability in cold, wet weather.
The board was also updated that the SR Fire Station generator is operational and that a local contractor, David Berry, has started building a roof to cover the unit. Staff noted that ARPA reporting connected with that project must be completed in December.
Why it matters: The erosion repair estimate represents a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar capital need that could require grant funding, consultant support and coordination with neighboring towns. A decision to pursue monitoring and consultant design work will affect upcoming budgets and any ARPA reporting obligations.
Next steps: Staff will investigate grant opportunities, consult with engineers and continue outreach to neighboring communities about cost sharing for river monitoring and erosion response. The town’s next selectpersons meeting is scheduled for Dec. 3, 2024.
