Newry selectmen outline FEMA-backed road and bridge repairs, summer drainage work

At the Town of Newry Selectmen meeting on June 18, 2024, Joelle Corey, the town’s Code Enforcement officer and road commissioner, reported progress on multiple FEMA-funded road repairs and described a slate of summer infrastructure work.
Corey said FEMA repairs on Valley View Road are finished except for the paving stage and that Wheeler Road is complete apart from a needed pavement patch. Work on Branch Road has begun with shoulder repairs and a replaced culvert; she said bridge and abutment repairs were slated to start the week of the meeting after Dig Safe clearance. Corey listed Lone Pine Road, Skiway Road and Sunday River Road as the next roads in the sequence for repair work.
She also described additional summer projects: replacing a culvert on Mountain View Road and a crushed culvert at 49 Greenbriar Road; drainage and erosion repairs on Timberline and Greenbriar roads; and ditching north of the Barking Dawg on Skiway Road. Corey said three bridge abutments on Branch Road may need to be dismantled and rebuilt and that Valley View Road paving remains on the town’s five-year road plan.
The report did not include firm contract award dates for all projects, but Corey said a contractor for the Simonds Brook bridge is expected to start in August with efforts to limit road closures. Selectmen did not take a formal vote at the meeting on these projects; the road commissioner’s report and the selectmen’s schedule-setting actions were recorded in the minutes.
