The Town of Newry Select Board was notified July 15 that Bruce Pierce has resigned, creating a vacancy on the Planning Board. Town Administrator Loretta Powers told the board the town has 60 days to recruit and appoint a replacement.
Powers noted that Pierce had been approved by the state and town in March 2010 as Fire Warden; his recent resignation was announced during the administrator's report. Edward Baker, chair of the Planning Board, asked the Select Board to recruit a replacement to fill the vacant seat.
Powers also outlined related calendar items: a Solid Waste committee meeting the following day, a FirstLight fiber meeting on July 23 in Bethel at 10 a.m., and the first Comprehensive Plan meeting on Monday the 21st at 5 p.m. She said Erica from AVCOG would attend the Comprehensive Plan meeting to advise the group on how to get started. The board did not vote on an appointee at the July 15 meeting; the 60-day window requires the Select Board to act in the coming weeks if they are to fill the seat without delay.
