Mayor highlights holiday toy drive, splash pad pre‑construction and expanded fireworks plan

Port Clinton — During his report to council on Dec. 9 the mayor thanked the Salvation Army and partners for their "Hope for the Holidays" campaign, saying the effort brought in more than 1,700 toys for local holiday distribution. The mayor invited council and residents to sign up to ring the Salvation Army bell at the Friendship Food Store and announced Santa appearances in town on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, and a noon appearance on Dec. 14.
The mayor also noted preparations for New Year’s Eve festivities — the 30th annual Walleye Drop will return to its original location on Madison Street north of the traffic light — and said the city intends to increase the Fourth of July fireworks budget by $20,000 as part of fundraising to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. He encouraged finance‑committee follow up on that item.
On parks projects, the mayor said most components for the Waterworks Park splash pad are on site and that a pre‑construction meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. the following day; crews have hauled about 900 cubic yards of dirt to the park in advance of construction.
The mayor’s report also referenced an approaching deadline to sign the Go Bus agreement: the city must sign by Dec. 19 to be part of the program next spring. Council members were asked to notify the clerk of swearing‑in preferences for the Dec. 23 meeting.
Quote: "They were able to bring in last Friday over 1,700 toys into our community that we given out over the holiday season," the mayor said.
Next steps: Staff will continue pre‑construction coordination for the splash pad and the director of safety and service was directed to pursue the Go Bus agreement and other project paperwork as appropriate.
