Selectboard backs library building committee to refine proposals and cost estimates

The Selectboard agreed to form a building committee to advance plans for a new or renovated library after hearing site proposals from Sebago Technics and remarks from Jean Lancaster, chair of the library trustees.
Lancaster said the library lacks storage and accessible spaces and noted that summer story times have drawn roughly "13 to 16 kids" per session. Board members said they wanted the facility to be multiuse — not only for books but for community meetings, children’s programs and events — and emphasized the need to control long-term maintenance costs for proposed landscaping.
The board proposed a committee structure that would include Jean Lancaster and another trustee, a selectboard member, a public-safety representative and two members of the public (one frequent library user and one non-user). The committee will be posted and formalized at the next meeting, and Sebago Technics will be asked to produce 3D exterior and interior renderings and preliminary construction-cost estimates.
Board members said they will consider using library reserve funds to pay initial design costs but stressed that broad community buy-in will be required before committing larger sums.
Next steps: the Selectboard will advertise committee membership, name a selectboard representative at the next meeting and ask Sebago Technics to produce curbside renderings and interior layouts for review by the committee.
