Beachwood City Council approves purchase of Fairmount Temple property

The Beachwood City Council voted this evening to approve the purchase of the Fairmount Temple property, parcel 74117047, and declared the measure urgent. Council President Alec Isaacson moved the measure and the clerk recorded a unanimous roll-call approval.

Isaacson said the acquisition is one of the "most significant opportunities our city has had in many years," and urged an open public process to decide the site's future. "This isn't just about acquiring land. It's about seizing the moment to shape our city's future," he said, and added that officials would engage residents, stakeholders and experts on potential uses.

Mayor Burns, who delivered a prepared statement after the vote, described the parcel as central to the city's future. "This parcel of land right in the heart of our city isn't just a piece of property. It's a canvas upon which we will paint the next chapter of Beachwood's story," he said, citing the city's history of strategic development and saying the site could become recreation, civic space or a thoughtfully planned development.

The mayor thanked Fairmount Temple leaders by name, singling out Eric Silver, chair of the temple's real estate committee, and Michelle Krantz, president of Fairmount Temple, for negotiating the sale. Council members also thanked staff and colleagues for their work to complete the transaction.

A technical issue with the council's live stream briefly cut off the mayor's remarks, a council member reported; staff said the stream remained available on the city's website and the council said it would notify residents and work to fix the problem. The council adjourned after the meeting; its next regular session is scheduled for Monday, July 15 at 7:00 a.m. at the council chambers.
