Beachwood City Council on July 15 authorized the mayor to execute a subdivision participation and release form to participate in the nationwide Kroger settlement in the National Opiate Prescription Litigation.
City law staff explained Kroger — which operates pharmacies statewide — is included in a proposed $1.2 billion nationwide settlement and that local governments that file the participation form may receive a share, though the dollar amount for any single municipality depends on national participation rates. Staff said the form must be submitted by Aug. 10.
Finance staff reported the city’s opioid-related fund currently holds about $19,000 and suggested the money could be used for drug education, prevention programs or animal-care costs tied to drug-detection dogs; staff noted the fund balance is small and will need to grow to support larger initiatives.
Council approved the measure by roll call and directed staff to complete the form before the stated deadline.
Council action: authorized the mayor to execute the participation and release form to participate in the Kroger settlement and directed staff to submit required paperwork.
