At the Sept. 3 Beachwood City Council meeting, seventh-grade student Ethan Con told the council his family received a tornado warning on their phones too late after a car trip on Aug. 6 and urged the city to install tornado sirens to give residents more time to shelter.
“I was in the car with my mother and sister when we heard a tornado warning siren,” Ethan said. He described phone alerts that arrived after the siren, adding, “Therefore, having a tornado siren in Beechwood is important because it will give us extra time to get to safety.”
Council President and the mayor invited residents interested in tornado sirens to attend a Nov. 18 meeting when the council will consider how to improve emergency notifications. No decision or appropriation for sirens was made at the Sept. 3 meeting.
The exchange was part of the public-comment period; the student’s remarks will be considered as the city evaluates notification options and scheduling for further discussion.
