Beachwood honored Chief Catherine McLaughlin on Sept. 3 at a City Council meeting and swore in Daniel Grispino as the city's next police chief, effective Sept. 14, 2024.
Mayor (role) praised McLaughlin as the city's first female police chief and credited her with bringing license-plate readers, a field office at Beachwood Place, active-threat training in schools and a drone program to the department. The mayor said her leadership “has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout her career.”
Chief Catherine McLaughlin addressed the council and guests, thanking staff and community partners and reflecting on her tenure: “It truly was a pleasure working with all of you.” She listed directors and staff by name and said the community’s support had meant a great deal.
Daniel Grispino, sworn in during the meeting, told the council and residents he was “honored and humbled to be here” and pledged to support officers and the community. Grispino said he would bring professionalism and a commitment to treating people “with the dignity and respect that they deserve.”
Council members and other officials offered tributes in a series of brief remarks, thanking McLaughlin for her service and welcoming Grispino. The council announced receptions for the chiefs and for the newly sworn firefighter after the meeting.
The swearing-in and tributes were ceremonial; no changes to departmental policy or budgets were acted on during the meeting.
