Westview students and parents press Poway Unified for timeline to restore Filipino language classes

Student Genesis Serban told trustees she was "sincerely thanked" by the board’s statement but that reinstatement depends on the district finding and onboarding a qualified teacher within two months.
Genesis Serban said the student‑led movement taught participants "how powerful my voice is" and asked the board to help with recruitment logistics and deadlines so the program will be ready by the start of the next school year.
Board members acknowledged the request and noted staffing and hiring processes. The chair and staff did not announce the name of a hired teacher during public comment; community members explicitly asked four questions: whether a new teacher has been hired, the next steps and opening date for the applicant pool, the district point of contact for hiring, and the hard deadline for onboarding.
What’s next: Staff were asked to work with Westview administration and community leaders on recruitment and to provide timelines and points of contact; the board did not take a formal vote on the Filipino program during the meeting.
