Chris Chiles of Patriot Builders (S9) described the design as a gambrel-style, two-story dwelling with expanded footprint and porches; he said the exterior finish would be cedar shingles and asphalt roofing. Several commissioners questioned how the proposed four gambrel roof elements would read from the public right of way and said the design added visual mass that did not match surrounding properties. The chair said he found the proposal "inappropriate for the neighborhood" and suggested a simpler gable on the garage or other design changes to reduce perceived bulk.
Commissioners suggested a site visit and asked the applicant to consider reworking elevations to better blend with adjacent homes. Because two regular members were absent, a motion to continue the application to the Nov. 13 meeting passed so the full board can review the design and consider alternatives.
Next step: Patriot Builders will consider design revisions, possibly including a more subordinate garage gable or other massing reductions, and return to the Historic District commission on Nov. 13 for further review.
