Committee members sought unit‑cost context. Pino described court inventory as four standard tennis courts (approximately 120 by 80 feet each) and three high‑school sized basketball courts (about 90 by 50 feet), which he estimated totals roughly 52,000 square feet of playing surface. Using his figures, a staff member calculated a ballpark unit cost of about $0.80 per square foot; Pino said his estimate accounts for prevailing wage and mobilization costs.
Members discussed phasing versus doing all courts at once. Pino recommended resurfacing a single location in a single mobilization because the specialized surfacing contractor is limited in New England and mobilization costs make staged projects materially more expensive. He also said resurfacing would address crown and drainage issues that can lead to cracking, and that resurfacing closures would likely take less than a week.
A resident who uses Johnny Kelly Park urged the committee to approve maintenance, stressing year‑round heavy use for leagues, camps and tournaments. Pino noted the courts are central to summer camp programming (about 150 children daily) and year‑round public use.
Next steps: The committee asked for the usual backup on square footage and unit pricing to be added to the updated funding sheets; no formal vote was taken Oct. 23.
