Demolition underway at 187 Arbor County Road as town reviews recreational plan for site

Staff member told the Dennis Select Board that demolition work has begun at 187 Arbor County Road and that the town has issued the board of health and demolition permits to the contractor, Costello. “The contract has been fully executed with the contractor Costello,” the staff member said. “Costello mobilized on-site” Oct. 8 and began exploratory demolition Oct. 9 to identify asbestos-containing materials.

Staff member said an on-site kickoff meeting was held Oct. 2 with the contractor and the town engineer overseeing asbestos abatement and public works. According to the update, all asbestos has been removed from the site and the project is estimated to be complete in about three weeks.

The Dennis Port West Dennis Advancement Committee presented a draft schematic to the select board on Sept. 24 proposing recreational uses for the property, and the board directed that the draft schematic be reviewed by the town site plan review team for permitting and regulatory-compliance checks, including planning, building, engineering, conservation, police and fire, recreation and DPW. The committee also presented a draft citizen survey; the board commented and made edits, and the survey is being developed to gather public feedback on possible uses.

Town officials said the permits have been assumed by the contractor and that no additional foundation removal is planned at this time. The board was told the site is very active and will continue to be during demolition and initial site work.

Next steps: the site plan review team will examine the schematic for permitting and regulatory compliance and the board will consider any related recommendations once the review is complete.
