Caribou County weed supervisor reports EPA compliance, funding and outreach plans

Scott Shuler, Caribou County Weed Supervisor, briefed the board on takeaways from a recent weed conference and local program activity.
Shuler said ground spraying is more beneficial than aerial spraying and that the county has met Environmental Protection Agency requirements. He relayed that the Attorney General indicated the weed supervisor has authority to enforce the noxious weed law and should coordinate with the sheriff’s department and the county prosecutor.
Shuler also reported outreach and operational items: a county weed poster contest for sixth graders in Soda Springs, Grace and Bancroft; a planned station at Bear Lake to check for invasive species; a requirement that gravel be weed-free; and project funding of approximately $12,000 for the year. He added that cloud-seeding operations have consumed about 145 gallons of fuel to date.
