Caribou County weighs jail certification as officials flag roughly $300,000 shortfall

Caribou County Sheriff Rick Anderson told the Board of Commissioners on March 11 that efforts to make the county jail a certified facility under Idaho Association of Jail Standards and PRIA requirements will require decisions on how to cover remaining costs.
Anderson said the county could ask neighboring counties that house inmates in Caribou County to contribute a portion of salary and benefits beyond existing contracts, or explore the pros and cons of a regional jail versus maintaining a county jail. "The revenue from the jail portion of the Justice Fund will cover all but approximately $300,000 of the jail budget," Anderson said.
Commissioners and staff agreed to raise the issue at the Four County Meeting in April in Franklin County to seek regional input and possible solutions. The discussion listed two concrete paths: asking other counties to share costs or commissioning an analysis of regional versus county jail structures; no formal decision was made at the March 11 meeting.
The matter will return to the agenda for follow-up after the April meeting and any additional cost estimates or proposals are available.
