Winifred Williams addressed the Martin County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 seeking a refund of a $172 solid-waste availability fee assessed for the 2020 tax year. Williams told commissioners she had only one solid-waste container at the property during the 2020 tax year and that she was unaware of the assessed fee when she purchased the home.
The Tax Assessor’s office had denied an earlier administrative request for release, citing the appeal as untimely and indicating two trash cans had been present historically; a photo in the agenda packet reportedly showed two cans. Williams provided a more recent photograph during the meeting showing a single trash can and said the older photo pre-dated her ownership. Chairman Ronnie Smith viewed the photo, told the board he believed the new image and said staff would review the applicable statutes and the property’s timeline before deciding whether to refund the 2020 charge. No board vote or formal refund was issued at the meeting.
Smith told Williams the board would “take another look at it” and staff would examine statutory authority for restoring taxes or fees. Williams praised the board’s consideration and the matter was left open for staff review and a future board action if warranted.
