Martin County reimburses resident $172 after solid-waste fee appeal

At the April 14 meeting, Martin County commissioners approved a $172 reimbursement to resident Winifred Williams for a disputed solid-waste availability fee from the 2020 tax year.
Williams had appealed the fee on the basis that her property only had one trash container during 2020; the Tax Assessor initially denied relief because no timely appeal had been filed and because past records showed two cans at the address. After a re-inspection and discussion during the board meeting, Commissioner David 'Skip' Gurganus moved to reimburse Williams $172; Vice Chairman Dempsey Bond Jr. seconded and the board approved the motion unanimously (5-0).
Tax Assessor Elisha Hardison had recommended maintaining the charge citing NC G.S. §153A-202 and the county waste ordinance, but the board rendered the final decision to reimburse the resident.
