District orders development of an AI use policy and fall staff training

Columbus ' The Columbus City Schools Policy Governance Committee voted June 9 to direct the district's CIO and legal team to draft a simple artificial-intelligence policy and accompanying administrative guidance, and to integrate AI best-practice training into fall professional development.
CIO Mr. Lockhart told the committee that "AI" covers a range of technologies and recommended a restrained, flexible policy that sets classroom expectations without blocking legitimate instructional tools. He recommended a short Neola-style policy supplemented by administrative guidance that can be updated as tools evolve.
"For the AI, we need to just define how that fits with those other policies," Lockhart said, urging the district to preserve classroom teacher discretion and to emphasize academic integrity: "the policy should say thou shalt not cheat, thou shalt not copy. And if you reference something that comes from AI, thou shalt cite."
The committee voted unanimously to ask the CIO and legal counsel to prepare draft policy language and to develop professional-development modules so staff can learn to integrate AI tools ethically and protect student and district data. No final policy was adopted at the meeting; staff will bring drafts to the board for consideration.
