Students from 5th District youth advisory council urge supervisors to expand youth councils countywide

Supervisor Lopez invited members of the 5th District Youth Advisory Council to the June 15 special meeting and several student council members described their work this year in leadership development, civic engagement and community outreach.
Yalenie Velasquez, chair of the youth council, told supervisors the cohort had met through the school year and urged the board to create youth councils in other districts so young people across the county would have a seat at the table. "If we truly believe that youth voices matter," Velasquez said, "those opportunities should not be limited to only one district."
Other council members, including Daisy Luna, Denise Vargas Ventura, Guadalupe Vega, Michael Segawa and vice chair Kelly Andrade, summarized activities such as a youth civic engagement fair that drew more than 150 students and partnerships with local organizations and schools. Students said the program helped develop public speaking and civic leadership skills and called for more support to connect youth to government.
Supervisor Lopez thanked the students and staff who supported the program and invited the council and board to take a group photo after the presentation. The recognition took place ahead of the board's budget hearing.
