During a Jan. 27 work session the Unified Government of Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County discussed several planning and operations items the board asked staff to carry forward to the Feb. 4 regular meeting, including cemetery bylaws, revisions to the conditional‑use permit (CUP) process, priority road repairs and reappointments to the Planning & Zoning board.
Chairman Charles Coffey opened the session at 9:00 a.m. A member of the public, Robert Sumner, described a training program he runs at the nearby NSA compound and offered to coordinate charity events and volunteer support for county projects at no cost.
Department heads provided routine updates: Recreation director Mordie Askew reported the basketball season and staffing needs for baseball and umpires; code/permitting staff (Samantha Hedgecoke) noted permits and the spring festival; public‑works updates (reported by the county manager) included a repaired breaker on well #4, heater replacements, hydrant work, hires and promotions, and a deteriorating water‑tower floor that will be replaced; animal control (Lou Beck) reported an increase in stray dogs possibly due to dumping.
County Manager Thomas Weaver outlined items to be added to the Feb. 4 agenda: draft cemetery bylaws, a collaborative review of the CUP process with Planning & Zoning (the commission asked staff to invite the Planning & Zoning board and to consider moving meetings to evening hours for public hearings), a proposal to change Planning & Zoning from seven members to five, creation of a SPLOST bank account item, and the use of 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road and related routes (the manager recommended deploying LMIG funds quickly to address urgent road conditions). The manager also recommended informational outreach about HB581 and noted the county will likely hold a special election in November for a local sales tax decision related to HB581 opt‑in.
The board voted to enter executive session at 10:12 a.m. to discuss legal, personnel and real estate matters; it reconvened at 10:55 a.m., and Chairman Coffey stated no votes were taken during the closed session. The work session adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
