During the public-comment portion of the Jan. 13 meeting, resident Ernest Havens of 109 Paul Street asked the council to address speeding and trash in his neighborhood, proposing a 15 mph speed limit and a speed bump to slow traffic.
Joneice Carroll of 810 N. Respess Street spoke about the proposed location of a shelter on Brown Street and referred to comments made at a recent Board of Adjustment meeting. Glen Goodwin of 303 W. 7th Street called attention to vacant and abandoned homes in Washington.
In scheduled reports, Josh Waters, Washington-Warren Airport manager, said airport projects are actively moving forward. Henry Capogna, Human Relations Commission chairman, said the volunteer HRC will provide a member at each council meeting for monthly updates; Nancy Burroughs summarized the HRC’s charge and duties. Paula Stephenson, director of the Tourism Development Authority, reviewed TDA financials and said the TDA has $20,000 in the budget for grants and has allocated $5,000 to the Green Book Project at the Turnage Theater. Mayor Pro tem Anthony Tyre asked the TDA to coordinate with other entities to support citywide efforts.
Billie Wilson presented a proposal for a New Year’s Eve Crab Drop event; Mayor Sadler suggested the TDA, the HRC and Mayor Pro tem Tyre work together on a committee to develop the project. The minutes record these items as public comment and board reports; no formal council action on the public comments is recorded.
