North Royalton accepts Purdue opioid settlement funds; city has not yet specified uses

The North Royalton City Council voted Sept. 2 to amend an earlier ordinance so additional opioid settlement funds from Purdue Pharma L.P. will be accepted and placed in Fund 202 upon receipt.
Council adopted Ordinance 25-124 by unanimous roll call after the council suspended the typical three-reading requirement. Councilmember Mary Gorjanc asked about the fund balance; Finance Director Jenny Esarey said there is "$70,000 some dollars" in the fund and that Police Chief Tarase is looking into allowable uses but has not yet proposed specific expenditures or brought requests to the finance office for inclusion in the budget or presentation to council.
Esarey said that while she is aware of "certain specifications" tied to opioid settlement funds, no formal plan has been presented to council at this time. The ordinance directs placement of incoming Purdue funds into Fund 202; it does not itself appropriate the money for particular programs.
Next steps: Police leadership and staff will evaluate allowable programs for the funds and, if appropriate, present recommendations to the finance director and council for budgeting and approval.
