Northfield engineer: pavement markings bid low; village to install ambulance shelter, begin road repairs and park work

The Village of Northfield's engineer and department heads used the council's Sept. 14 meeting to report on several public‑works and public‑safety items that the village plans to carry out this fall.
Engineer Dan Collins told council the village solicited six vendors for the 2022 Pavement Markings Program and received three bids; the low bid of $17,318.50 came from Pat Flowers, Inc., which Collins said was below the engineer's estimate and within the project budget. Collins noted that because the bid amount is within the mayor's current spending authority and budgeted, council action to accept the bid was not required. He also said the Vincent Avenue Pavement Extension Project was complete as of Sept. 9, 2022 and the village is waiting to receive the maintenance bond.
Service Department Superintendent Jason Walters said he will move forward with installing a pad and shelter at the fire department to house a second ambulance. Walters also reported plans to repair bad sections of road behind the plaza this fall and to begin a crack‑sealing program for all village streets soon. He said materials must still be removed from Smith Park before the planned basketball court and sidewalks can be installed.
Police Chief John Zolgus said the department had a quiet summer and has begun preparations for the Halloween party; staff will meet on Friday evenings in the garage to ready the event. Fire Chief Jason Buss said he had distributed his report to council and reminded attendees that clambake tickets for the upcoming VFW event are $35 and available from the fire department.
Recreation and planning notes: Councilmember Alan Hipps said the Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Sept. 21 was cancelled while the applicant finalizes plans; the applicant may be heard at an Oct. 19 meeting if plans are filed. Mayor Jennifer Domzalski said the next Movie in the Park is Friday, Sept. 16 (Sing 2 at dusk) and Oct. 15 will feature Killer Clowns from Outer Space (an adult‑themed showing).
What happens next: The service department will begin the crack‑sealing program and proceed with work on the ambulance pad and plaza repairs; the Vincent Avenue project awaits a maintenance bond before final administrative closure. Department heads indicated items that require council action will be returned to a future agenda.
