At the Nov. 9 Village of Northfield council meeting, Ellen Bertel of the Old Historical Society of Northfield described the society’s stewardship of a house museum built in 1844 by William Palmer and asked the Village for a financial donation to help cover operating costs.
Bertel said the house — built using a vertical-beam construction style and later converted to a school and then a teacher’s dormitory — is leased from the school board at no rent and is maintained by an all-volunteer staff. The society’s annual budget is $3,000, funded entirely by donations; those funds cover insurance, utilities and minor maintenance. Bertel said the Old Historical Society is only eligible for grants that require matching funds and that, without additional donations, there will be no money for needed repairs or improvements. She said Northfield Center already contributed $500 and added, “Any financial help the Village can provide would be appreciated.”
Bertel asked the council to consider a donation to support a plan to turn one of the rooms into a historic library. Council did not make a commitment at the meeting and did not vote on a donation during the session; council members thanked Bertel for her remarks.
The meeting minutes do not record a request amount from the society beyond describing its budget and the existing Northfield Center contribution. The society’s facility serves as a repository for artifacts that document “Old Northfield,” including portions of Sagamore Hills, Northfield Center, Northfield Village, Macedonia and parts of Boston Heights.
