Northfield meeting briefs: chief plans retirement, online permitting goes live, salt costs rise

At the Jan. 11 meeting Mayor Jennifer Domzalski and department heads gave routine updates on personnel, community events and operations.
Mayor Domzalski said Sgt. Zambach informed her he will retire this winter and thanked him for his years of service. She also noted the little libraries have been popular and that the Recreation Board received a $1,500 Community Events Grant from NOPEC. "The little libraries have been a wonderful addition to the Village and are very popular," she said.
Police Chief John Zolgus told council he plans to retire in February and will provide a precise date after meeting with the pension board; Fire Chief Jason Buss confirmed the fire station project bid opening date was delayed and reported the Santa event was well received. Service Department updates from Councilmember Kevin Lewis included the Jan. 1 launch of the Cloudpermit online permitting system, the winter driveway program serving 204 seniors (about 37 man-hours to plow those driveways), 56 zoning violations issued last year, and that road salt now costs $74 per ton (estimated Village cost this year ~$66,000 versus $38,000 last year).
Boards reported planned community events (Adult and Children's Easter egg hunts at Smith Park on March 31 and April 1, movies in the park June–October), cemetery maintenance and security upgrades, and openings/reopenings for local businesses (Ground Xero, Onyx).
