Columbus City Schools installs new Komo Elementary playground for pre-K students

Capital Improvements staff said a new 2–5-year-old composite playground, sensory equipment and play-surface upgrades were installed at Komo Elementary as part of a broader permanent-improvement funded playground replacement initiative covering multiple sites this summer.
Angel Stevenson, project manager for Capital Improvements, told the committee the district installed a new composite play set at Komo Elementary designed for 2–5-year-olds and added sensory equipment such as chimes, xylophone and drums to support pre-K programming.
Stevenson said the Komo installation is one of several playground upgrades completed this summer, with similar replacements at six sites paid from permanent improvement funds. The work also included updating older 5–12-year-old sets installed last summer, converting expanses of asphalt into interactive play spaces with a five-lane track, basketball court, four square and funnel ball, and incorporating school logos to increase community identity.
Stevenson said the upgrades aim to provide age-appropriate equipment for early learners, expand sensory play, and improve recess environments. The district plans to continue similar work at more sites "for the foreseeable future" as budget allows.
