Republic council approves small capital purchases, hotel/motel grants and names mayor pro tem

At its Jan. 5 meeting, the Republic City Council unanimously approved purchases for a pressure-tank bladder and a street-light pole, adopted a city financial plan, awarded hotel/motel grants to local groups, scheduled a Jan. 9 special meeting on Ferry County contracts and appointed Liz Stinson mayor pro tem.
The Republic City Council on Jan. 5 unanimously approved several routine expenditures, adopted a city financial plan and appointed a mayor pro tem during a 16-minute regular meeting.
Public Works Director Todd Cole told the council a light pole damaged by a garbage truck had been replaced and requested approval to replace a pressure-tank bladder at a cost of $3,130.39. The council approved that purchase on a motion by Council Member Marty Rugo, seconded by Council Member Liz Stinson.
Clerk-Treasurer Nick Olsen asked the council to approve replacement of a street-light pole at a cost of $3,300.48; that expenditure was approved unanimously on a motion by Rugo, seconded by Stinson. Olsen also presented a City Financial Plan, which the council adopted unanimously after a motion by Stinson and a second from Rugo.
Cole noted that a new local business, the Bronco Bar, is opening soon and has experienced sewer issues; Public Works will loan a sewer snake. Cole said the business has installed a grease trap and is compliant with city ordinances.
Stinson presented the council’s recommended Hotel/Motel funding awards for 2026. The council approved the following allocations unanimously on a motion by Stinson, seconded by Rugo: Kettle River Musical Festival, requested $3,000, approved $3,000; Omak Chronical, requested $3,478, approved $0; Republic Chamber, requested $6,000, approved $6,000; R VBC, requested $7,950, approved $7,500; Stonerose, requested $9,805, approved $7,500; Kettle River History Club, requested $500, approved $500.
The council also addressed administrative items: a special meeting to consider Ferry County criminal justice contracts was set for Jan. 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., and members unanimously appointed Council Member Liz Stinson as Mayor Pro Tem for 2026 on a motion by Marty Rugo, seconded by Loni Simone.
Mayor Gabe Becklin reported a town turkey count of nine and said he will contact the Fish and Wildlife Department about the flock. Council Member Liz Stinson raised ongoing landowner complaints about driveway repairs on Erdman Street after a water leak.
The meeting adjourned at 5:16 p.m. following a motion by Stinson, seconded by Simone. No public comments or correspondence were recorded.
