Republic council approves pre-design for $3.4 million water reservoir option pending attorney review

The City of Republic on April 20 approved a professional services agreement, pending attorney review, to begin pre-design work on a proposed replacement of the city's water reservoir and control system. The agreement authorizes Varela to start pre-design work so the city can pursue a $3.4 million option that would replace the water tank and install a new water control system.
Pete Cowger of Varela presented the project to the council and described two cost options: a $3.1 million option that replaces only the tank, and a $3.4 million option that adds a new control system. Cowger told the council the city has been awarded $2.1 million in grant funding and has applied for the remainder; he said construction might begin early next year if funding is secured.
Councilor Marty Rugo moved to approve the professional services agreement, and Councilor Liz Stinson seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Public Works Director Todd Cole said he had taken Cowger on a tour of the water system, including the access road to the tank and the wells south of town, as part of early planning. Clerk-Treasurer Nick Olsen noted that financing options remain under consideration and that, if grant requests fail, the city would need to explore alternatives such as loans.
The council's approval will allow Varela to start pre-design work while the city finalizes funding. The professional services agreement was approved pending final attorney review.
