During the public-comment portion of the Sept. 8 meeting, alumni and community members urged stronger ties between Shaw High School and its alumni association and proposed fundraising and volunteer initiatives.
Michael Tucker, who identified himself as vice president of the Shaw High alumni association, told the board the alumni are ready to partner with the district on career days, scholarships and volunteer mentoring. He asked the board to provide clear direction about how alumni can support students and suggested the district create an alumni office or point of contact to coordinate activities.
Joe Clark, also an alumnus, proposed a co-ed Shaw alumni softball event to raise funds for students and asked for permission to clean and renovate the field, pointing to safety concerns such as branches and debris. Clark said he could mobilize alumni volunteers, coordinate sponsors and handle permitting if the board grants access and approval for the renovation effort.
The board thanked the speakers; members suggested continued coordination with district staff and noted interest in alumni involvement.
Separately, Lillian Tober, whose retirement the board approved, addressed the board to thank colleagues and to say she had taught in the district for 33 years and graduated from Shaw High School.
What happens next: Board and staff can follow up with the alumni association on proposed events and field work and will coordinate any necessary permits, volunteer agreements and safety reviews before approving renovation activity.
