District leaders told the East Cleveland Board of Education on June 9 that the district has met most of the academic-improvement benchmarks in its plan and is awaiting a formal state determination due June 30.
The superintendent reviewed the year-end scorecard and said the district met 16 of 20 metrics (80%). District leadership pointed to a rising performance index, currently reported at 55.6 — the highest in a decade and up roughly 17 points since the COVID period. “The district is evaluated by the state board of education on that day to determine if we met the majority of our academic improvement benchmarks,” the superintendent said, adding that the district has submitted evidence it believes meets the criteria for removal from academic distress.
Connie Townsman, the newly reintroduced director of teaching and learning, spoke about implementation of the district’s strategic plan and said instructional work will intensify to push performance toward longer-range targets. Officials said they are hopeful the June 30 evaluation will lift the academic distress designation; they also noted that, even if the designation is removed, the district’s strategic plan calls for ongoing, aggressive work to close gaps and raise the performance index further.
