Board moves to executive session; treasurer contract to be placed on June 23 agenda

The East Cleveland Board of Education voted to enter executive session on June 9 to discuss the employment of a public employee. The board left open session, held a closed-door discussion involving the superintendent, the treasurer and legal counsel, then returned to public session and announced that unresolved contract matters would be placed on the June 23 agenda for board consideration.

Treasurer (Mrs. Whit) said she requested the executive session to understand the board’s position on her contract and to confirm whether the board would nonrenew or provide a new agreement. “I requested the executive session because I needed to understand where the board is with my contract,” the treasurer said. The treasurer reported she had not received a final contract copy that she expected and asked for clarification about timelines and the rollover process. Dr. Mary Rice told the board she had confirmed that the statutory date for negotiation notice for treasurer and superintendent contracts is March 1, and the board discussed next steps to ensure counsel circulates the contract language for review.

Board members agreed that the treasurer’s contract would be placed on the June 23 agenda and that attorney Andrew would ensure the appropriate language and distribution were completed in advance. The board also discussed administrative contract timing (noting some administrative contracts run Aug. 1–July 31) and agreed to verify dates as part of their review. No formal personnel actions were announced in open session; the item will return to the public agenda for formal action.
