The East Cleveland City School District Board of Education voted April 14 to accept the district's monthly financial report for February 2025 and to certify tax levies as determined by the budget commission.
Shireen Fountain, speaking for the finance committee, reviewed the report and fielded questions about higher expenditures through February. "Fiscal year-to-date general fund expenditures totaled 28,385,805 through February which is ... 2.2 million or 8.7% higher than the amount expended last year through February," Fountain said. She noted the largest variances were building hire costs (about $1.22 million) and certified regular salaries (about $553,000) compared with the prior year.
Staff explained that the higher salary totals reflect a negotiated increase (a 2% raise for certified staff) that is included in the current fiscal year expenditures; the district said the salary and benefit increases account for the majority of the variance.
The board also approved a resolution to accept amounts and rates determined by the budget commission and to authorize and certify necessary tax levies to the county auditor; that motion was approved unanimously.
The board accepted the financial report and moved on to other agenda items. The district did not provide a multi-year forecast or additional line-item cost detail during the meeting; board members asked staff to continue to provide clarity on expenditure drivers at future finance committee meetings.
