Veazie council reappoints election clerks, approves $2,000 donation to robotics team

The Veazie Town Council on March 2 unanimously reappointed a slate of election and ballot clerks and approved a $2,000 donation to the Veazie Vikings Robotics Team, while also authorizing a one-day town-office closure so staff can attend mandatory CVR election software training.
The council voted 5-0-0 to reappoint Democratic election clerks Alfred Bushway, Richard Jones and Patricia Rice to terms ending June 2028; to reappoint Republican clerks Randall Bishop, Francis Kelly, Norma Noble, Rosemary Freese, Ashley Holmquist and Joseph Harman to terms ending June 2028; and to reappoint unenrolled clerks Marilynn Bishop, Sandra Patterson, Jerriann Pollard and Sheryl Purvis to terms ending June 2028. Councilor Paul Messer moved several of the reappointment motions and Councilor Jeff Manter seconded; each motion carried unanimously.
Councilors also reappointed Sandra Patterson as Election Warden and Julie Strout as Registrar of Voters, each for terms ending June 2027. The council appointed Margaret Adams as a Democrat election/ballot clerk through June 2028.
On a separate motion, the council approved a $2,000 donation to the Veazie Vikings Robotics Team to help the group travel to a national competition in Houston, Texas. Councilor Aaron Turcotte moved the donation and Councilor Karen Walker seconded; the motion passed 5-0-0.
Councilor Paul Messer moved and Councilor Jeff Manter seconded a motion authorizing Town Manager Mark Leonard to close the Town Office on March 25 so staff may attend mandatory CVR software training; that motion also passed unanimously.
The council discussed guidance for manager-led steps on several facility agreements, including the Community Center lease with Eastern Maine School of Self Defense, an agreement for AA meetings, and the Veazie Salmon Club lease; no formal motions were recorded on those leases. During the manager’s report, councilors asked about the status of a sewer line behind the Town Office and discussed inviting the robotics team and their parents to an upcoming meeting to present a certificate. The next budget meeting is scheduled for March 11.
