During public comment on June 11, Judith Reel urged the Ridgefield City Council to prohibit the sale of kratom within city limits (or at minimum within 1,000 feet of schools), citing concerns about youth access, unregulated products, and examples of other Washington jurisdictions that have restricted sales. Reel referenced local downtown sandwich‑board advertisements that market kratom and urged the council to consider Spokane and Spokane Valley's approaches and an MSRC citation included in her letter.
City Manager Steve Stewart told the council staff had done preliminary research and that the city attorney would examine whether local prohibition of sale and distribution is permissible; staff noted earlier research of Spokane and Spokane Valley suggested local regulation is possible. The city said it will return with an analysis and possible ordinance language for council review before any decision. No formal council action was taken at the meeting.
