Community education reports record summer signups; Safe Routes sidewalk work and Eagle Scout park project planned

Mahtomedi Community Education reported more than 1,200 summer registrations — its highest ever — and described a County-led Safe Routes sidewalk project likely to begin in July. A Mahtomedi resident also presented an Eagle Scout plan to build 4–5 bat houses in local parks.
Mahtomedi Community Education Director Kate Andersen told the Park Commission on March 18 that the department’s summer catalog launched the day before and had drawn more than 1,200 registrations, the highest total to date.
Andersen said the program had hired a seasonal grounds employee early and that a Mahtomedi high‑school graduate is slated to begin in May. She also briefed the Commission on a County-led Safe Routes to School sidewalk project that will extend from the middle school to Wildwood/Stillwater Road; construction is likely in July and the school entrance may be closed during work. Andersen announced a Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 30 from 9–11 a.m. at the District Education Center and asked for volunteers.
Separately, Mahtomedi resident David Waldal presented an Eagle Scout project proposing to build four to five bat houses for local parks, saying the structures “provide natural mosquito control.” Director Goebel agreed to work with Waldal on site identification and paperwork for city approval.
The Commission received the updates for informational purposes; no votes were taken.
