The Mahtomedi Park Commission received an update March 18 on the Southwest Park dog park project, with staff saying a survey delayed by recent snow is expected next week and the final design will move forward through the city’s public bid process.
The update clarified how the community may support the project: donations can be made directly to the City and designated for the dog park and are tax‑deductible, fundraising events and business solicitations are permitted, and any recognition signage using tiered acknowledgments would require review by the City attorney, Director Bob Goebel told the Commission. Commissioners suggested a memorial brick program and Goebel said he would contact Becky Markovitz, who has experience with past brick programs.
Commissioners also discussed outreach and fundraising venues. Mahtomedi Community Education Director Kate Andersen noted that the upcoming Pet Extravaganza in June would be a convenient opportunity to host a fundraising table.
Next steps: staff will complete the survey, finalize the design for bidding and continue to guide community fundraising under the city’s rules. No formal vote or funding commitment occurred at the March meeting.
