Berea keeps parking ban, rationing salt as winter storm disrupts services

BEREA, Ohio — City officials said on Jan. 26 that a winter storm has forced temporary operational changes including an extended parking ban, rationed salt use and altered trash pick-up schedules.
Barb Jones, the Director of Law and Public Safety, said "the parking ban will remain in effect until tomorrow," a move meant to aid plowing and emergency access. Tony Armagno, Director of Public Service, told council the city has been rationing salt because of a regional shortage and the recent storm, and "will continue to do so until salt supplies stabilize," with crews prioritizing bridges, intersections and main streets.
Armagno also described adjustments to trash pickup after contractors treated the day as a holiday: "Kimble is acting as if today were a holiday, so tomorrow, Kimble will collect those who are normally collected on Monday. On Wednesday, they will pick up those containers that are normally collected on Tuesday." He said the City clears sidewalks by the Townhouses on the Triangle and is working through backlog on Prospect between West and Baker Street.
Council members urged residents to check on neighbors, clear snow from fire hydrants and test smoke-alarm batteries. Council President Jim Maxwell and other members thanked Service, Police and Fire crews for storm response.
The parking ban and salt-rationing decisions remain in effect until staff report supplies and road conditions have stabilized. The council did not vote on new emergency funding at the meeting.
