Vinalhaven selectmen approve a set of budget line items and a library appointment

VINALHAVEN — The Vinalhaven Board of Selectmen on Jan. 27 approved multiple budget line items recommended by the Budget Committee and made one appointment to the Library Trustees.
The board voted 4-0 to accept the Budget Committee’s recommended Harbor Master budget with the Repairs and Maintenance line reduced to $1,000, resulting in a final Harbor Master total of $26,446. Selectman Pam Alley moved the Harbor Master motion; Leslie Dyer seconded. The board also approved the Animal Control budget at $6,686, the License Septage Site budget at $2,300, and town insurance at $82,911, each on 4-0 votes following motions by Alley and seconds by Dyer.
In a separate personnel appointment, Selectman Pam Alley moved to appoint Selectman Tom Anthony to the Library Trustees to fill a term ending June 2026. The motion passed 3-0-1, with Anthony recorded as abstaining from the vote.
The board handled routine procedural business at the start of the meeting: members approved the agenda as amended (the Jeff Tolman Music Award presentation was postponed) and adopted the minutes of the Jan. 13 meeting; each of those motions carried 4-0.
What the votes mean: the approved line items implement the Budget Committee’s recommendations for these specific accounts; they do not represent adoption of the full municipal budget for the fiscal year. The library appointment fills a trustee seat through June 2026; because Anthony abstained, the record shows a non-unanimous consent for that appointment.
Next steps and context: the board discussed other budget-related items later in the meeting, including employee-paid family and medical leave (PFML) contribution options and forthcoming Knox County deputy-salary estimates, which the Town Manager said she expects to receive this week. Those items were not resolved at the meeting.
