Rocky River reports $7.7M in permits as University Hospitals and Akron Children’s announce local projects

Rocky River’s building department opened the year with a robust pace of construction activity, Mayor Bobst told council at the Feb. 23 legislative meeting.
The mayor reported 83 permits with a combined valuation of $7.7 million to date, up from about $7.2 million at the same point last year. Among the city’s largest ongoing projects, she said, is a planned University Hospitals renovation: about 15,000 square feet in the former Planet Fitness space at Beachcliff Market Square with an estimated valuation of $5.4 million to house orthopedics and a Harrington Heart and Vascular outpatient presence.
The Szabo Shoes building was demolished and the sign was salvaged; the site is intended for a University Hospitals urgent care facility, though no permit valuation has yet been submitted. Mayor Bobst also said Akron Children’s Hospital has purchased 20220 Center Ridge Road, a large office building across from Burger King, and plans are under way for renovations including coordination with city staff on storm-water management. A fourth project, described as Roundstone Residences at the American Legion site near Lake and Linda, is intended to provide residential units for visitors and trainees and will include a fitness center; valuation was not specified.
Director Snyder and Director Reich are working with Akron Children’s on storm-water concerns around their parking deck, the mayor said. The administration and the land-use commission are reviewing the larger proposals and coordinating with applicants and impacted residents as plans develop.
Next steps: Council members asked to receive updates as permits and project applications move forward; several projects remain in the permit or review stage.
