Berea council advances first reading to market city-owned 280 Kempton Drive; tax abatement possibility discussed

On Jan. 5 the Berea City Council held the first reading of Ordinance No. 1-3, which would authorize the mayor to enter into a listing agreement with a professional realtor to market and sell 280 Kempton Drive, a property the City received from the Land Bank.
President Jim Maxwell noted that because the property has not yet been formally transferred to the City, the interior condition is unknown. Director of Law and Public Safety Barb Jones said the City will not perform substantial improvements before sale and that any costs incurred would be recouped from the sale proceeds; most preparation work would be handled in‑house.
Council members engaged in general discussion about the potential for a tax abatement on any future addition to the property but recorded no decision or commitment about abatement at this meeting. Ordinance No. 1-3 stands on first reading and will return for further action, including Board of Control approval before a sale contract would be executed.
