Selectmen review capital projects, sidewalks, playgrounds and resiliency funding options

The Vinalhaven Board of Selectmen reviewed a suite of capital projects and budget priorities during the Jan. 13 meeting, from bridge approaches to playground upgrades and sidewalk improvements.
Town Manager Marjorie Stratton said she sent MaineDOT a request to inspect Lane’s Island Bridge while state crews are on-island for ferry-terminal parking-lot work; the board noted approaches would be the town’s responsibility and urged budgeting for approach work. Parks commission members will continue planning playground upgrades; Millie Martin said she will prepare a proposal to move and rehouse the galamander, including pouring a pad and rebuilding the enclosure. Sidewalk work on High Street and Clayter Hill to the school was discussed, with the board noting some work may wait until after the downtown project.
Members discussed Meadow flooding and a grant expected in March that could help continue an engineering study already underway. Selectmen also asked staff to consider TIF account funds and Resiliency Fund matching needs when drafting capital budgets. Budget meeting dates were set for Jan. 15, 22 and 29; the budget committee will meet on Jan. 14, 21 and 28.
