Council discusses U.S. 23 safety, park walking path and new development interest on Berger property

The Village of South Bloomfield Council discussed options to improve safety along U.S. 23 and planning for park amenities at its Aug. 5 meeting.
Mayor Aaron Thomas read a response from the Waverly police chief saying aggressive patrols were the most effective deterrent to speeding in that community. Village Administrator Joe Allen said planning includes a bike path and sidewalks placed one street over on less-busy side streets for safety. Council member Ken Everts questioned the traffic-study dates; Allen said Strand and Associates set the dates to meet state requirements. Resident Andrew Roffe said he does not expect pedestrians to use sidewalks on U.S. 23 but thinks they would use sidewalks on Union Street. Dena Cobb asked whether ODOT could be asked to extend a 35-mph speed zone further north and south; Allen said he would inquire.
On parks and development, Joe Allen requested a Park Committee meeting to discuss a new walking path around the detention pond by the park. He reported the Berger property on U.S. 23 has been sold and that the buyers contacted the village to discuss potential development; Woody Blanton reiterated interest in a pedestrian bridge to the park, which Allen said was cost-prohibitive.
Next steps: Park Committee meeting to review walking-path plans; Village Administrator to follow up with ODOT on speed-zone possibilities and to meet the buyers of the Berger property about proposed development.
