The Otisfield Conservation Committee on Jan. 6 agreed on a set of spring volunteer and education events to engage students and residents.
Committee members said they intend to restart a sixth-grade field trip to the vernal pool this spring. Peter Tilkmeter and Maureen will contact Jessica Sheildrick, principal, to reach the sixth-grade teacher and arrange logistics; Julie Ywoskus will check whether bus transportation is available and funded. Lee Dassler noted an adult vernal pool program may be offered by Kelly McNutt; the group aimed to schedule both programs in March or April depending on vernal-pool timing.
For volunteers, the committee scheduled a roadside cleanup for Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a rain date of May 9, and a trail assessment and clean-up day on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon at Hennigier Park. The town informed the committee that the road crew will assist with debris collection if volunteers bring materials to the trail kiosk/parking area. The committee plans to publicize the dates on the town website, Otisfield Facebook pages and with the Friday Walking Group to boost participation.
Members expressed concern about low participation in last year’s roadside cleanup and asked Maureen to coordinate with local sports schedules and the Otisfield Community School to encourage student and parent involvement; Maureen will report needs at the March meeting. The committee noted there will be no February meeting and set its next meetings for March 17 and April 2, 2026.
The committee did not record formal motions tied to resource commitments for these events in the minutes; event logistics and volunteer recruitment will be managed by committee members and volunteers ahead of the scheduled dates.
