Courthouse rehabilitation progresses; commissioners discuss safe storage and demolition timeline

A presenter (Duncan) reported weekly contractor coordination with no major issues so far. He said a change order to substitute helical piles for a previously specified foundation method should save approximately $10,000. Staff described a phased disconnection of additions and said, if the schedule holds, demolition of the rear portion of the building could occur in July.
Commissioners and staff discussed moving or leaving three safes located in the basement, main and upper floors. Because the basement safe may be difficult to extract, staff suggested leaving it in place; other items, including judge portraits and a large four-by-four-foot photo from the justice court, will be moved to county offices or temporary storage. Staff and commissioners agreed to coordinate with facilities staff (Cody and Bob) and follow up on which items to retrieve.
No formal action was taken; staff will continue coordination with contractors and provide follow-up details on records and artifact relocation.
Next steps: staff to coordinate safe handling and artifact retrieval, finalize change-order paperwork and report demolition timing back to the board.
