Melinda Baas, executive director of the YWCA, and Kelly Smith, the organization's lead advocate, presented to the Rock Springs City Council on Oct. 7 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Baas told the council domestic violence remains largely hidden and urged the community to make information and survivor stories part of everyday conversation to reduce stigma. She said, "for the past 7 years, approximately 350-450 people receive assistance," and noted that while homicides have decreased there have been more reports of sexual assault.
The presenters invited residents to an Awareness Vigil and glow walk/run on Oct. 17, 2025, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Young at Heart Senior Center. Baas and Smith emphasized that the "best way to reach" YWCA services is the organization’s 24/7 crisis line at 307-352-1030.
Council members asked logistical questions: Councilor Hanson asked where the YWCA is located; Baas reiterated the crisis line as the primary contact. The presentation concluded with the mayor and council acknowledging the issue and urging community awareness.
The YWCA presentation occurred during the council's presentations and proclamations portion of the agenda.
